    Glucose Tests

There are several ways to determine a person’s blood glucose level. And while outcomes are derived from varied techniques, they all determine the same thing.

Glucose tests, regardless of the type, are done for various reasons:

1.To check for the presence of diabetes
    2.To monitor diabetes treatment
3.To check for the presence of gestational diabetes, which takes place during pregnancy
4.To check for the presence of hypoglycemia or low blood glucose level.

The dissimilar tests to measure blood glucose are as follows:

    Fasting blood sugar or FBS

This is generally the first type of test done to check the presence of diabetes. The measurement is taken when the patient has been fasting for not less than 8 hours prior testing.

Before an FBS test is done, the patient should not have taken any food or liquid, except water, for 8 hours before a blood sample has been taken. For those who have diabetes, they may be advised to defer their diabetes medication, such as insulin, until after the blood sample has been tested.

Two-hour postprandial blood sugar or 2-hour PC

This type of testing is done 2 hours after the patient’s meal. Typically, this test is considered as a home glucose level test. Preparation involves consuming a meal 2 hours before the blood sample is to be taken.

    Random blood sugar or RBS

Such testing does not call for fasting and does not have anything to do with when the patient last ate. Random measurements may be taken anytime during the day. This is particularly helpful because blood sugar levels among healthy individuals rarely vary, regardless what time of day. Blood sugar levels which are greatly varied during the same day may mean the presence of an underlying problem. Random blood sugar test is otherwise known as casual blood glucose test.

There are no special requisites or preparation required during a random blood sugar testing. However, it's important that patients confer their health care professionals everything there is to know about the test. They need to establish what they would need the tests for, how these are supposed to be carried out, what outcomes to expect, and how to interpret and deal with such results.

    Oral glucose endurance test

This type of test is done as a first-step diagnosis for pre-diabetes and diabetes. During an oral glucose endurance test, the patient is made to drink a certain type of liquid containing glucose, after which, a series of measurements are taken. The presence of gestational diabetes, or the type of diabetes which comes with some pregnancies, usually employ the oral glucose endurance test. Further, this is rarely ever used in diagnosing diabetes among non-pregnant patients.
